welcome

This website provides background on my books The Blue Cabin and Still On The Sound, and hopefully gives some flavour of island life.

The Blue Cabin is on Islandmore, which as far as we know is the only year-round inhabited island in Strangford Lough which has no causeway – access is boat-only. There is no mains electricity, and apart from Eddie the west highland terrier and a cross-section of the wildlife for which Strangford Lough is justly renowned, Lynn and I are the only inhabitants.

Strangford Lough is the biggest inland sea in the British Isles, a beautiful and inspiring corner of Ireland and an internationally important centre for wildlife. Three-quarters of the European population of pale-bellied brent geese over-winters here, and otters, grey seals, common seals, porpoises and a number of less common bird species, including egrets, are regular visitors at The Blue Cabin.

Having had careers in law, property and furniture, I now divide my time between caring on the mainland and writing at The Blue Cabin. Both my books are about island life and since publication I have given numerous talks and slide presentations on island living in general and Strangford in particular. I contribute to newspapers and magazines and am currently working on a novel. I also offer a proofreading service to publishers and others – details are on the Proofreading page.

My wife Lynn McGregor is a professional artist. Her studio is just a few feet from the water’s edge and many of her semi-abstract landscapes are inspired by her immediate surroundings and informed by the vagaries of island life. Lynn’s work can be seen at www.lynnmcgregor.co.uk.

I hope you find what you are looking for. If not, feel free to drop me an email using the link on the Contact page.

Welcome!
